Mesh & Lace, by Dan Monick
is a body of work spanning years and locations in Los Angeles, CA.Approach
The hot air of an invisible smoke stack breathes oppressively over the parking lot, filling the air with the smell of fresh donuts and overpowering the exhaust fumes nearby. It’s the same smell all day long. If you close your eyes it could be the early morning hours when the commuters stop for their coffee on the way to work, but it’s the midnight hours. This is the time when the lights in the neon signs overhead come alive and dance around the glass in the car window. Luring, seductive, and full of promise.
Back in the car, down a few blocks another sign calls out. The night never seems to end. The lights flicker but never fade. A song on the radio plays.
Trapped in a maze of mesh and lace.
It’s all the time now, there’s no way out.
No way out.
