SCRATCH THE EARTH
SCRATCH THE EARTH
Conception

The conception of this project began with the creation of a short experimental story. This narrative formed the foundation upon which the entire work was built. To accompany the story, Chris gathered a collection of photographs captured during journeys in Los Angeles and the American West. These photographs would serve as visual elements to complement and enhance the story.
Design

In the design phase, careful attention was given to the arrangement of the images. The sequencing of the photographs was meticulously planned to coincide with the narrative. This sequencing aimed to create a seamless connection between the text and the visuals, enhancing the overall impact of the project.

A distinctive feature of this project was the decision to allow specific portions of the short story to exist independently as standalone art pieces. These sections, when divorced from the narrative, would convey a unique artistic message, contributing to the multidimensional nature of the work.
Print Production

The production process for Chris's book was a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and artistic vision. The incorporation of gold foil on the cover, spine, and back, reminiscent of the vintage dictionary, showcased a dedication to detail and a commitment to aesthetics. The choice of a matte finish for the interior maintained a cohesive and refined appearance throughout, making the book a striking embodiment of both form and content.
